Spotlight on: Graeme Base

Graeme Base is possibly one of Australia’s most loved children’s author and artist. Originally from England, Graeme moved to Australia when he was 8, studying art throughout school and completing a Diploma of Art at Swinburne University of Technology. Graeme worked in design and advertising before turning to illustrating children’s books. Graeme’s first children’s book was My Grandma lived in Gooligulch, published by the first publishing house he sent it to! His next book, and possibly his most famous, Animalia, featured dozens of detailed paintings of animals, with, in what will become standard Base fashion, a gripping children’s story and a link between all of the illustrations. Graeme has written and illustrated twelve children’s books, including The Eleventh Hour, Uno’s Garden, and Jungle Drums.
